Samsung says its the No.1 Smartphone brand in India

When I was checking out some news sites ,  I noticed an unusual thank you banner and the Samsung logo and decided to check it out. It took me to a landing page which is a thank you page for Samsung mobile users. Samsung says that it is currently the No.1 Smartphone brand in India according to the promo. It is quoting a GfK nielsen India Retail Store Audit Report for mobile phones in 50,000+population towns in November 2011. Samsung claims to have a market share of 37.9% in Smartphones in that month for that particular segment.
We all know the Galaxy S2 sold like hot cakes ever since launching in June 2011. Now the Galaxy Note is also gaining some popularity. Now Samsung is tapping the entry level Smartphone space with the Galaxy Y. Symbian has been the most popular operating system for several years now but with Nokia going with Windows Phone ,  Symbian has been losing market share pretty fast but Nokia is still the leader in the Indian mobile space in terms of overall market share.
And Dear Samsung , we can see the Galaxy Nexus in the promo above but not in stores ? WHY ?

The need for Siri for Android, Skyvi success

Many iPhone 4S users now enjoy hearing Siri’s dulcet tones delivering just the required information they need but if you have an Android device you can access a similar service. Apple’s Siri has been so popular that Skyvi was developed to offer a similar experience on Android. It uses voice command in much the same way as Siri and finds your location using your Android handset’s GPS. Just like Siri though it seems that sometimes it has trouble picking up a voice so you’ll need to enunciate every word.

If you head to this Android Market linkyou can find out more about Skyvi actually listed as ‘Skyvi (Siri for Android)’ which already seems to be a huge success with a 4.5 from 5 star rating. It’s a free app for a limited time so what’s stopping you trying it out. In fact looking at some of the comments from those who’ve downloaded Skyvi it seems that many don’t imagine a need for Siri and find Skyvi more than acceptable, especially as the developer says that although its not perfect they’re working hard to make it better than Siri. If you want to find out more check out the video below this story for more on Skyvi.

Android 5.0 Jelly Bean

Digitimes, one of the websites specialized in “tech gossip,” said that Google could launch Android 5.0 Jelly Bean in the second quarter of 2012. Rumor has it that Google is working around the clock to launch Android 5.0 as they would want to offer a mobile platform that can compete against Microsoft’s Windows 8, and run on both tablets and laptops. Windows 8 will be introduced in late 2012.

YAL Concept Watch Inspired By Tron

Watch makers TokyoFlash are currently taking votes on whether or not to create the YAL Concept Watch, which has been designed by Yoann from France.
The YAL watch as you can probably guess from its design has been inspired by Tron, and uses a number of blue LEDs to tell the time. For example 5 LEDs in the middle, 2 LEDs in the outer branches, 2 more LEDs on the left and PM indicator on = 5h + (2×5)mn + 2 mn + p.m

Yoann explains how Torn music inspired the YAL:
“For a long time, I like to make some graphic creation in my free time and I used to put on it my little logo and “YAL” as a signature. I thought it will be cool to design a watch concept with it ! So, I took my pencil, turned on the Tron music and began to create a watch with my inspiration.”
So if you fancy helping the YAL Concept Watch make the move to production, jump over to theTokyoFlash website and cast your vote.

Samsung Galaxy Note Android Ice Cream Sandwich update edges step closer

The Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) update for the Samsung Galaxy Note got a stage closer to reality this week, with the news that an early, official version of the singing-est, dancing-est edition of Android is already on some owners’ phones.
The alpha ICS ROM, clocked on a Chinese tech forum by the good chaps at the XDA Developers site, is only compatible with Chinese models of the Note and isn’t terribly slick right now. That’s something born out by lukewarm testimonies from tech-savvy Note owners who compare it unfavourably to the Gingerbread build that the Note shipped with.

Even so, after some of the update debacles and delays we’ve known with certain manufacturers, it’s heartening to know that work on the Note ICS platform bump is progressing apace.
Earlier this year, Samsung confirmed it plans to bring ICS to the Galaxy Note and the blockbuster blower that is the Galaxy S2 in the first quarter of 2012.
Features Android 4.0 brings to handsets include a smart unlock function that harnesses face detection technology and revamped versions of native apps.

Nokia 803 to feature 4-inch display, extra-large camera sensor

The Nokia N803, expected to be the company’s last Symbian device and the successor to the N8, is supposed to be revealed at MWC. The latest rumours however, have dubbed the device the Nokia 803, and given it higher-end specifications than previously expected.
image description

The Nokia 803 will reportedly feature a 4-inch AMOLED display, and not the 3.5-inch display that wasrumoured earlier. It will also come with what is being called the “largest camera sensor ever seen on a mobile phone.”
Expected to run on Nokia Belle, the Nokia 803 will also feature an HDMI-out port, microSIM card support and NFC connectivity, according to the latest rumours. Previous leaks claimed a 1GHz processor, 512MB of RAM, and DLNA connectivity as well.
The Nokia 803 will probably be shown off at the end of the month at MWC, and should hit shelves by May.

Google working on heads-up display glasses

Google is apparently working on more hardware, and is said to be developing heads-up display (HUD) spectacles at Google X Lab. The spectacles will be able to provide augmented reality functions, as they reportedly also feature a front-facing camera.
image description

Other recent reports indicated that Google is alsoworking on a wireless entertainment device for the home. 9to5Google quoted a source who said the heads-up display glasses looked like Oakley Thumps, seen above, presumably also featuring earphones.
The Google HUD glasses will apparently have processing hardware at par with last generation Android devices, and will also function as a smartphone.
UI navigation will be handled by the user, rotating and tilting his head. Contrary to ascribed the heads up display functionality, the report goes on to say the display will not be transparent, forcing the user to “stop walking around” - rather pointless for wearable tech.

The Pirate Bay to stop using torrents from Feb 29

image description
The Pirate Bay, still one of the most popular torrent sites on the web, has announced it will stop serving BitTorrent trackers by February 29, after which date, it will only serve magnet links.

The news was announced on The Pirate Bay site, with Mr Magneto, presumably the site’s admin, posting the following:
"In following with our decision to skip .torrent-files in the nearby future one of the biggest steps will come on the 29th of February. We will stop serving .torrent-files for all torrents that has more than 10 peers from this date... End of communication."
The magnet links will allow BitTorrent users to download the torrent file directly from peers' computers. The plain-text format will also help keep the site’s archive in manageable sizes - most users will also appreciate the archive, if the previously legally-troubled site ever goes the MegaUpload way.

Making Use of the Windows Key in Windows 7

Now that I know to use the Windows key to lock my screen, I thought I should poke around and see what else it can do. The answer turns out to be “lots!”
Win – all by itself – brings up the “Start” menu.

How to Cascade Windows in Windows 7

You used to right click an application in the tray and cascade all the open windows in an application. Very useful if you’re like me and end up with 20 or so messages open and want to move through them quickly. Along came Windows 7 and …whaaaattt??? No cascade??? Seriously???
What you’ve been seeing are these cute little thumbnails you can click on:
Hovering over the Outlook icon brings up a thumbnail view of every open window
Those are great fun until you have to start panning across the screen to about the 5th window. 30 open messages=zero fun.
Enter Shift + Ctrl + Right Click. Shift + Ctrl + Right Click on the program icon (in this case, Outlook) and you’ll see a window with the old options:
You can still cascade, stack, show windows side by side, minimize, restore or close all windows
Say yea.
