The Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich was unveiled in October 2011 during a Samsung + Google event and it made its market debut along with search engine giant’s flagship smartphone, Galaxy Nexus.
Digitimes, one of the websites specialized in “tech gossip,” said that Google could launch Android 5.0 Jelly Bean in the second quarter of 2012. Rumor has it that Google is working around the clock to launch Android 5.0 as they would want to offer a mobile platform that can compete against Microsoft’s Windows 8, and run on both tablets and laptops. Windows 8 will be introduced in late 2012.
Thus, the fifth generation of the Google’s mobile platform will be basically the second one developed exclusively for tablets, a successor for Android 3.0 Honeycomb. The sources quoted by Digitimes say that Android 5.0 Jelly Bean will integrate some of the Chrome OS functions, Google’s operating system that ships on Chromebooks like Samsung Series 5 or Acer AC700.
Meanwhile, Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0 will be offered on the Android-powered smartphones and certain tablets. Some of the smartphone manufactures already announced thy are preparing the Android 4.0 ICS update for some of the smartphones in their portfolio, while others are set to unveil new devices that come pre-loaded with Google’s new operating system.
Quoting the “Taiwan makers,” Digitimes writes that Android 5.0 Jelly Bean will land in the Q2 of 2012. If so, it would be a premature debut for Android 5.0, as its successor, Ice Cream Sandwich, only arrived on 1% of the Android-powered devices, as Google report shows.

Rumor has it that the the switch between Android and Windows (and the other way around) will be made without restarting the machine. Android 5.0 might be the operating system that replaces Chrome OS, as the latter one failed on becoming a popular platform.
