There are more than six months since Asus presented, in the summer of 2011, the Asus Padfone concept: a unique Android device with a separate tablet and smartphone component that are designed to work in conjunction as a versatile device. At Mobile World Congress 2012 event in Barcelona, the Taiwanese company presented the technical specifications of their unique device and unveiled the first details regarding the Asus Padfone’s release date.

The smartphone belonging to the Asus Padfone combo is a regular device, with a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED qHD display (960×540 pixels) protected by a Gorilla Glass layer, that gets its power from a dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 processor, helped by an Adreno 225 GPU and 1GB of RAM.
The Asus Padfone comes with 16GB, 32GB or 64GB of internal flash memory (depending on the customer’s budget) that can be expanded with up to 32GB thanks to the microSD card slot. It also comes with WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, 3G and Bluetooth 4.0. Asus Padfone sports an 8MP camera on the back and an user-facing VGA camera.
Nothing spectacular so far, but the aforementioned smartphone can be integrated into the Asus Padfone Station, a tablet-like gadget, but with no hardware platform, as it’s meant to use the smartphone’s hardware resources.
Thus, when you connect the smartphone to the Padfone Station you will get a 10.1-inch tablet with a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels and 1.3MP camera, GSM antenna, GPS, speakers and microUSB and HDMI ports.
The even more interesting part is that Padfone comes with a stylus pen, similar to the one we’ve seen withSamsung Galaxy Note or with the new Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet. You can use the stylus to write something down or to use some of the stylus-based applications, like Adobe Photoshop Touch. As you probably guessed, the brand new Asus Padfone uses the brand new Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich mobile operating system.
Least, but not last, you can even connect the Padfone to a full QWERTY and transform the tablet into a laptop. Basically, the Asus Padfone can transform into both a tablet and a laptop, using exclusively the smartphone’s hardware resources.
Asus Padfone could be an ideal gadget for those who had troubles syncing their devices to transfer data from one to another. With the Asus Padfone they can now have their work on a tablet, laptop and even take it with them everywhere they go once they pull out the smartphone from the docking station.
Asus Padfone will be available in stores starting April 2012, but the officials of the Taiwan-based company haven’t announced the price of their brand new toy.
