Android Was Designed for Cameras

It is now time for smart cameras to show up, although the outgoing Android head Andy Rubin says that they could have been around for many years. During a tech event in Tokyo, he revealed that Android was initially developed as an operating system for cameras, not smartphones. He confirmed that the exact same platform and operating system the company developed for cameras became Android for smartphones. Rubin demonstrated slides from an investor pitch created 9 years ago, which was focused on wired and wireless cameras linked to a so-called “Android Datacenter”. So Android was destined to be used with smart cameras, but Google stepped in and made the operating system what it is today. According to Andy Rubin, his team of developers eventually decided that the market of digital cameras wasn’t big enough. In addition, Rubin said that he was mistakenly worried about Microsoft and Symbian, not Apple – this, as you can see, turned out to be wrong.

Android boss also talked about the decision to make the OS completely free for cellphone makers – the company wanted as many smartphones to use Android as possible. This is why instead of charging any sum of money – whether it is $99, or $59 – to Android, the company was simply giving it away for free, as they realized the industry was price sensitive. As you can see, this approach proved to be quite successful and in result, Android quickly occupied a huge share of the market, which grew up to 70%, as for 2012. In the meanwhile, the devices that the OS was initially intended for – Android cameras – are still few and far between. Well, at least they are finally hitting the market – it would be interesting to try a smart camera running a familiar Android.

Globally, the phone is shipping with either a homegrown Exynos or a Snapdragon 600 processor depending on the market. We expect India to get the Exynos variant due to the lack of LTE networks in the country. As for the pricing, we’re hearing that the device might launch around the Rs. 40,000 mark to just about undercut the HTC One which has received rave reviews. Google Play Store India now sells the 16 GB Nexus 7 for a price of Rs. 15,999

nexus-7-india

It has been a while since we saw the Google Nexus 7 *officially* launch in India for Rs. 19,999/- but now, out of the blue, we have got the devices page on the Indian Google Play Store selling the Nexus 7 directly for Rs. 15,999 for the 16 GB version. Earlier, it was Croma, the Tata retailer that was selling it, but looks like we are finally seeing Google directly selling the device.
Lets face it, the ASUS made Nexus 7 is pretty old now, but it sure isn’t not worth its price. At Rs. 15,999 this is probably the best pure Google device you can get. But does this also mean the Nexus 4 and the future Nexus devices might be sold in India through the Play Store? We really do hope so.

Nvidia reveals GeForce GTX TITAN, the world’s fastest GPU, priced at Rs. 68,499

geforce-gtx-titan
Move over AMD and Nvidia’s own GeForce GTX 680, the king of gaming GPUs is here. Just a while ago, Nvidia revealed their new GeForce GTX TITAN graphics unit, which is supposedly the most powerful GPU on the planet right now. Nvidia says that is made of the same Kepler architecture that the company’s been using for its range of graphics units recently. It is also purportedly delivering the same amount of power as the GPUs in the Titan supercomputer, powered by the Nvidia GK110 GPUs. Here’s a short promo of the new GTX TITAN in all its aluminium glory -
The GTX TITAN has 2,668 GPU cores, which are about 75% more than the ones on the GTX 680, but a little less when compared to the GTX 690, which has a grand total of 3,072 GPU cores running at 915 MHz by default while the TITAN runs at a lesser 837 MHz. But on the memory side, with 6GB of DDR5 memory and a bandwidth of 384-bit, the TITAN is better than the 690. So, with a better memory bandwidth, multi screen gaming would be a total win with the TITAN, but Nvidia themselves say that single screen gaming may favour the 690 a bit. Nevertheless, the TITAN is a beast. The exterior is made of aluminium and has, what Nvidia calls,
According to Nvidia, these are the highlights of the TITAN, in a nutshell -
The GeForce GTX TITAN:
  • Contains 7 billion transistors
  • Has 2,668 GPU cores—75%  more than the Company’s NVIDIA GeForceGTX 680 GPU
  • Delivers 4.5 Terraflops of single precision and 1.3 Terraflops of double precision processing power
  • Supports new GPU Boost™ 2.0technology which automatically boosts graphics performance and supports unlocked voltage and advanced controls for even more gaming control and overclocking customization
  • Can be combined with additional GTX TITANs in SLI mode for even more performance
Nvidia says the GTX TITAN will be available within a week, and in India, it is priced at Rs. 68,499. ASUS and Zotac will the Add-in card partners who will be selling this card in the market. We are certainly looking forward to it, are you? Let us know in the comments section below.
