Microsoft have announced the details about Windows 8 upgrade. The good news is that besides Windows 7, Windows Vista and even Windows XP will be upgradable to Windows 8.
Unfortunately, there are some restrictions related to older systems upgrades. As we already know, there will be four Windows 8 versions: standard, Pro, Enterprise and RT. The latter one developed fortablets with processors manufactured on ARM architecture, while Enterprise will be availableexclusively for business segment.

The users will be able to upgrade to Windows 8 standard and keep the Windows settings, personal files and installed apps if their machines are running on Windows 7 Starter, Windows 7 Home Basic or Windows 7 Home Premium. This is probably the most convenient way to upgrade, when the user is capable of changing Windows version and continue to work without the slightest disturbance.
Windows 7 Stater, Windows 7 Home Basic, Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows 7 Professional andWindows 7 Ultimate can be upgraded to Windows 8 Pro in the same conditions. The upgrade to Windows 8 Enterprise is possible only if the PC is running Windows 7 Professional or Windows 7 Enterprise.
The upgrade fro Windows Vista without SP1 to Windows 8 standard can be performed as well, but only the personal files will be kept. If SP1 was previously installed on the Windows Vista machine, then the system settings will be remembered. Unfortunately, the apps installed on Vista can’t be transferred to Windows 8, so you will have to re-install them.
The customers who are still using Windows XP can upgrade their PC to Windows 8 only if the SP3 is installed. The personal files will not be deleted, but the system settings will be lost and the apps will require re-installation.
Microsoft announced that the machines running on one of the aforementioned operating systems with a customized user interface are not upgradable to Windows 8. Another limitation is related to the Windowsversion. You can’t upgrade Windows 32-bit Edition to Windows 8 64-bit edition.
