Quadcore HTC Edge to be showcased at MWC

Last year was not a great year for HTC, their target profit was not achieved and also their devices were overpowered by the smartphones and tablets coming out of Samsung’s camp . Partnership with Beats did not market their products to a great extent. This year they are expecting to make their device superior and more powerful, and they will be leading the charge with is the HTC Edge, a quadcore nVIDIA Tegra 3 powered beast, which they will be showcasing at MWC.

Frankly speaking I am not very excited about this device because quadcore is just a marketing strategy, though it uses 4 cortex A9 processors, the L1 and L2 cache provided is equal to the one present in Tegra 2, which means nVIDIA does not expect anyone to use more than 2 cores at a time. Also we should note that Tegra 3 is a synchronous processor which will result in the consumption loads of battery, but we hope that the fifth core will be able to help us here. Superior processing power and a really powerful GPU makes it the leading processor available in the market right now, but how long will they be able to hold this position is the real question.
Anyways coming back to HTC at Mobile World Congress, the HTC Edge looks like a powerful comeback from them with a 4.7″ AMOLED 720P display, this will also be HTC’s first device to run a nVIDIA SoC, so we are not sure how great the compatibility will be. They are also planning to showcase their successor to the HTC Sensation which is the HTC Ville a slim device and a dual core processor. The game is on between Samsung and HTC this year. Also present at MWC would be the quadcore Samsung Galaxy S III. I am sure that this MWC is going to be really great. So stay tuned for more news.

Ways To Convert DOCX To DOC

As you all know with the launch of Microsoft Office 2007, Microsoft unveiled the Office Open XML format in the office suite.Office Open XML (also referred to as OOXML or OpenXML) is a free and open Ecma International standard document format, and a proposed ISO/IEC standard for representing spreadsheets, charts, presentations and word processing documents. OpenXML was orginally developed by Microsoft, but then it was handed over to ECMA to be developed as an open standard.

OpenXML format being the default format in the Office 2007 suite, we face a lot of compatibility problems while exchanging documents, the although suite comes with a backward compatibility mode which many users are not aware of. Many of you might have received these new formats from clients, colleagues, friends using Office 2003 earlier or OpenOffice type of office packages like me, and didn't know how to view this new format.

There are quite a few solutions for our problem, until we make the switch to the new Office 2007.

Online Converter

This is a cool service although people may not prefer it for confidetial documents.

The Microsoft Way

If you have Microsoft Office 2003 or earlier installed just download this[http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=941B3470-3AE9-4AEE-8F43-C6BB74CD1466&displaylang=en] compatibilty pack from the Microsoft website, this will enable you to open, print edit, and save .docx files in your existing Office installation.

If you are an OpenOffice user or similar, download Microsoft Word Viewer [http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=95E24C87-8732-48D5-8689-AB826E7B8FDF&displaylang=en] and then the above mentioned compatibilty pack, which eanbles you to view, print and convert the DOCX file.


The Word 2007 docx format is currently not supported by GMail Word viewer or Google Docs & Spreadsheets. Hope they come with the solution soon, it's really nice to be able to preview attached word document in GMail. 

Nokia Lumia 900 for AT&T packs 4.3 inch display, 1830 mAh battery, LTE and Front-facing camera

Nokia and AT&T today announced the Lumia 900 which supports AT&T’s 4G LTE network. The device looks very similar to the Lumia 800 but packs a bigger screen and battery. It packs a 4.3 AMOLED CBD display and a 1830 mAh battery.There is a 8MP camera on the back with Carl Zeiss optics and there is also the front-facing camera which was missing in the 800.We are not sure if this device will be coming to other countries but Nokia is betting big on the Lumia 900 and trying to re-enter America which is one of the most competitive mobile markets in the world today.Here is the complete press release

Nokia India ties up with India Times for Nokia Shop – Online Store

Nokia India has launched an online store for its range of mobile phones called NokiaShop at nokia.indiatimes.com. The backend seems to be powered by the India Times shopping engine. I would assume the stocks are supplied by the Nokia distribution network as it is a joint venture and authorized by Nokia India. One of the highlights is the possibility to buy phones with Interest Free EMIs spread over 3 or 6 months. There is a Cash on Delivery payment option too for most phones and other payment modes supported are Net Banking,Credit Card and Debit Card.

Delivery time to most cities is under 4 days and there is a 7 day return policy.Pretty good move but a tad late. Wish they start stocking accessories too.

HTC Titan II announced : 16 Megapixels , LTE

HTC just announced the Titan II , successor to what still remains the biggest WP7 handset to hit the market. The Titan II bumps the spec sheet by including integrated LTE connectivity. The screen size still is a massive 4.7″ at a disappointing WVGA resolution though this remains a WP7 limitation.


The camera has been bumped up to a whopping 16 Megapixels.  Backside illumination is included which should definitely help in the low light department.  A fast wide-angle lens (f2.6, 28mm) is included alongside a dual LED flash. Extras like red eye reduction, image stabilization, a panorama mode for landscapes, and a burst shot mode make for HTC included additions. The rear cam takes 720p video.

Sony Xperia Ion announced at CES , Coming to AT&T

AT&T has just announced the Xperia Ion at its CES keynote event. The Android smartphone sports a 4.6″ HD 720p display. The camera is a 12MP unit equipped with Sony’s proprietary Exmor R technology for better low light capabilities. 16GB of inbuilt storage will be available on the LTE equipped device.

A dual core 1.5Ghz processor powers the show here. The Ion is Playstation Certified and will allow users to play PS1 classics and PSN minis. The phone launches with Gingerbread onboard but the Android 4.0 ie ICS update is expected later this year. The Xperia Ion will be sold under the Sony brand on AT&T in the US.

Sony SmartWatch and Smart Wireless Headset pro announced

Sony has announced SmartWatch and the Smart Wireless Headset pro announced. The SmartWatch is a micro display for Android smartphones, to wirelessly and discreetly access calls, messages and applications. The Smart Wireless Headset pro is a Bluetooth stereo headset that also works as a standalone MP3 player and FM radio.
The Sony SmartWatch is an 8mm thin and has 1.3” (128×128 pixels) OLED touch display with 9 distinct touch areas in a 3×3 matrix. It uses Bluetooth to communicate with the phone, and its dust and splash proof (supporting IP54). It also has Android Market that would let you download compatible apps for the watch. It has widgets for SMS, e-mail, call and music handling, Facebook, Twitter, time and date and more. It also comes with different colored wrist band or you can even use it as a clip.
The Sony Smart Wireless Headset pro is a Bluetooth Stereo Headset that can also be used as MP3 player which supports MicroSD cards up to 32GB. It shows caller ID on call and has battery status indicator. It also has built-in FM radio, 3.5mm audio jack and offers up to 13h music playback.

Both the SmartWatch and Smart Wireless Headset pro are compatible with most of the Sony Ericsson smartphones and other select Android phones.

Sony Xperia S announced, 4.3-inch HD display, 12MP camera and 1.5GHz dual-core processor

Sony Xperia S is the first smartphone under the Sony brand in the Xperia NXT next generation series announced at CES. It comes with 4.3 inch (1280 x 720 pixels) HD Reality Display with Mobile BRAVIA Engine, 12MP camera with LED flash that can take shots in just 1.5 seconds directly from standby mode. It is powered by 1.5GHz dual-core processor and runs on  Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) that is upgradable to Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) in Q2 2012.

Lenovo S2 Android smartphone with 1.4GHz dual-core Snapdragon CPU announced

Lenovo has announced the S2 Android smartphone at CES 2012. It is powered by 1.4GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8255 dual-core processor and runs on Android 2.3 Gingerbread with Lenovo Magic 3.0 UI. It has 3.8-inch (800 x 480 pixels ) TFT display, 8MP Camera that can capture panoramic photos and with secondary VGA video calling camera.

It runs on secure version of the Linux kernel that protects personal data. Other features include, 512MB RAM (8GB version) / 1GB RAM (16GB variant), 3G HSPA+ connectivity, WiFi, Micro USB, 3.5mm audio, HDMI and MHL Connectivity and 1500mAh battery.

The Lenovo S2 is currently available in China for approximately US$400 and it will be available worldwide soon.
